Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) for shale gas has vastly increased the availability of natural gas all over the world. However, this has come at an environmental cost. Show your class how fracking is carried out with our paper model.
• Students build their model of a fracking well using the colorful parts of the template
• Utilize the model to work through the steps involved in creating a well and producing natural gas from it
• Consider the environmental issues (such as earth tremors, pollution, etc) fracking raises
• Takes about 30 minutes to build the model!
The model covers: drilling a vertical borehole, horizontal drilling, steel plating the well, cementing the well, the use of plugs (plug and perf), perforating guns, frac liquid (stimulating fluid), extraction of gas and storage and disposal of waste (produced) water.
Your class will use their model to consider the pros and cons of fracking.
