Solar cells are easy to understand with our model!

Solar cells (or photovoltaic cells) collect light and convert it into electricity and are used in solar panels that capture energy in solar farms and even power spacecraft! Your students will learn how solar cells work with our model.

• Students build their paper models of a solar cell
• Visualize how silicon, boron, and phosphorus are used to create two different semiconductor layers (N-type and P-type)
• Discover how the atoms are arranged into a lattice
• Utilize the models to see how the P-type silicon layer produces electrons when its atoms are struck by photons
• Learn how electrons leave holes that are filled by other electrons. This movement of electrons creates a flow through a circuit generating direct current (DC) electricity.
• Takes about 30 minutes to build the model!
