ABOUT THIS PRODUCT:

Why do vertical currents happen in the ocean?

Vertical movements of water in the ocean are important for distributing vital nutrients throughout ocean ecosystems.

These movements can bring cool, nutrient rich water from deep in the ocean to the surface (upwelling) and send warmer surface water downwards to the seabed (downwelling).

Upward currents are especially important along coastlines for wildlife and fishing because they provide needed nutrients to plankton, which are the base of the sealife food chain.

First, your students build their model coastlines using the templates. Then, they utilize their model to look at how upwelling and downwelling happen. The model covers both the northern and southern hemispheres and why the Coriolis effect and Ekman transport are important.

Takes about 30 minutes to build the model!

Origami Organelles are downloadable paper models that you print and make as many times as you like! When you purchase a model, you are licensed for unlimited use on a single site or campus.
