Plant seeds are adapted to enable new plants to grow and survive. They contain the embryo, food source and are protected by a tough seed coat. This model shows the structure of a bean seed and allows visualization of what happens when germination begins.

• Germinate the seed and learn what it needs to germinate and how the seedling changes as it grows

Covers: seed coat (testa), food source (cotyledons), embryo, shoot (plumule), root (radicle), hole for water (micropyle) and scar (hilum).
