Your students will explore gas exchange in the lungs by making a magnified model of a single alveolus and capillary out of paper. They will follow the fate of oxygen and carbon dioxide as they diffuse from the red blood cells across the single cell layers of the alveolus and capillary.
This activity is perfect to discuss how structure relates to function in the lungs. Particulate inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning are also covered.
