Analysis of DNA Methylation Using Restriction Enzymes

SKU: 205

ABOUT THIS PRODUCT:

In this experiment, students explore the effects of DNA methylation on restriction enzyme activity. Plasmid DNA will be digested with the restriction enzymes DpnI and DpnII. When digested with these enzymes, methylated and unmethylated DNA will produce restriction fragments that are distinct from one another. The restriction fragments are then analyzed using agarose gel electrophoresis. After visualizing the gel, students determine which sample is methylated.

• Introduce students to the important field of epigenetics
• Explore the biology of genomic imprinting and long term gene regulation
• Use restriction enzymes and gel electrophoresis to identify methylated and unmethylated DNA samples
• An advanced genetics lab with simple equipment and time requirements!

* Requires wet ice shipment for next day delivery (by 3:00 pm in most areas).
