332 - Mitochondrial DNA Analysis Using PCR
Description
The mitochondrion is the organelle responsible for energy production in the cell. Mitochondria possess their own DNA (mtDNA) chromosome. Mitochondrial diseases have been mapped to this chromosome and mtDNA is commonly used for forensic identification. In this experiment, students use PCR to amplify a specific region of the mitochondrial chromosome and perform gel electrophoresis to visualize the PCR products.
Shipped ambient. Some components require -20°C storage. Amplified mitochondrial DNA obtained from this experiment can be sequenced. However, the presence of point mutation(s) could potentially indicate a predisposition for a certain genetically inherited disease. It is extremely important that information of this nature be handled with complete confidentiality. For this reason, EDVOTEK does not provide services for DNA sequencing.
