In Search of the Sickle Cell Gene

Southern blotting is an important technique used widely in clinical genetics and research. By transferring DNA from an agarose gel onto a membrane, the method allows you to analyze and identify the DNA bands on a gel precisely. Your students will use Southern blotting to find a point mutation in the hemoglobin gene indicating Sickle Cell Anemia.



Kit includes: instructions, Ready-to-Load™ DNA samples, UltraSpec-Agarose™ powder, practice gel loading solution, electrophoresis buffer, InstaStain® FlashBlue™ and FlashBlue™ Plus™ stain, calibrated pipet, 100 ml graduated cylinder, microtipped transfer pipettes, nylon membranes, filter paper and blot stain.

All you need: electrophoresis tank, power supply, variable micropipet and tips, balance and microwave or hot plate, waterbath and incubation oven.

  For 5 Lab Groups

  Electrophoresis 45 minutes, Blotting overnight, Staining/Destaining 10 minutes.
